It can seem daunting if you are an adult looking to get into figure skating, but while many skaters started as youngsters, figure skating is a super-fun hobby for adults, too!
As an adult figure skater, you can learn at your own pace while getting a fantastic workout and meeting like-minded people on the ice. If you find yourself becoming competitive, there are many adult competitions available, from novice to world championship level, that you can participate in.
Age is but a number, so make your dream of figure skating a reality, no matter what your date of birth may be!
How To Get Started With Adult Figure Skating: Just Start!
To get started, you first need to find your local ice rink. If you’re a complete newbie, we recommend booking an initial skate session to familiarise yourself with the ice and wearing skates.
You don’t have to do anything special or even attempt any figure skating moves just yet. Simply take the first step, or glide around the barriers – whichever you prefer!
Gearing Up For Figure Skating As An Adult
If you’re a complete newbie to the figure skating world, we recommend going for recreational or beginner-level figure skates. These are designed to be soft and comfortable while giving you enough ankle support to help you learn the basics.
We’ve written a complete rundown of beginner figure skates so that you can choose the right ice skates for you — check it out here.
Once you decide that you are all-in with figure skating, getting the correct gear and equipment is easy! Pop into our Willies store in Coventry to get your skates correctly sized and chat with our ice skating experts on how to get the most out of your figure skates.
Finding a Figure Skating School
Finding a coach is crucial if you’re serious about figure skating and want to progress your skills. Learning with somebody who knows what they’re doing and how to train you safely will only enhance your experience and help you move on to more technical figure skating skills much faster.
We recommend having a few sessions on your own first, then booking a taster lesson with a figure skating school to be sure it’s something that you want to do. Check out your local ice rink to see if they host adult figure skating lessons.
Making Time For Figure Skating As An Adult
As with any new skill, you must dedicate time to practising figure skating regularly. Make a habit of visiting the ice rink at the same time each week, and don’t try to do too much too soon — practising once or twice a week consistently is better than skating six times in one week and then taking a month off!
Joining a skate club is another fantastic way of getting involved with adult figure skating. You can meet other skaters regularly, get extra support and guidance from figure skating coaches, and participate in club competitions.
