Dropping into the butterfly position to make the save takes a toll on a goalie’s knees, so knee pads are used to protect the knees and hips from this added strain. They also deliver some added leg protection against flying pucks.
Like most of your gear in ice hockey, choosing the right knee pads for you comes down to personal preference, so it’s a good idea to come into our store at Willies in Coventry to try out a few different brands.
Blocking-style goalies need equipment as big as possible while remaining mobile to cover the net, so Warrior knee pads that are E+ or Pro+ are your best option. If you’re a more athletic goalie, you want small, lightweight protective gear to keep you as mobile as possible. Warrior Ritual E, Pro and Bauer Vapor Hyperlite knee pads are the best choices for these more agile goalies.
For beginner goalies, we recommend the Warrior Ritual X3 E knee pads; they’re a great value option while you’re learning the fundamentals of ice hockey.
Your knee pad usually corresponds to your leg pad measurement. To take your leg pad measurement, bend your leg slightly and measure from your ankle to the centre of your kneecap. Then measure from the centre of your kneecap to your mid-thigh. Add those measurements together, plus your skate size and an additional inch to account for padding. This number will be your perfect leg pad size that you can then use to find your knee guard measurement.
