  • HOW DO I USE A LACE PULLER?

If you’re struggling to tie your laces tight enough and want to save your hands from tough wax laces, a lace puller is a must-have accessory in your kit bag. Simply loop the retractable metal hoop under your lace and pull to tighten. You can also use the lace puller to loosen your laces quickly at the end of a shift.

  • HOW CAN I STOP LACE BITE?

Lace bite is that painful condition resulting from tying your laces too tight or practising full steam ahead when you haven’t worn your skates for a while. It causes irritation down the front part of your lower leg to the toes — like there’s a bruise there that you can’t see. It’s usually progressive, so the more you try and work through it, the worse it will get.

To treat it, you’ll need rest (that means skipping practice), icing your ankles and taking painkillers. If taking time off from the ice sounds like a nightmare, prevention is better than the cure! Willies stocks a bunch of accessories like gel pads and lace bite sleeves that disperse the pressure, reduce friction and take the edge off that pinching sensation.

  • SHOULD I USE SKATE GUARDS OR SOAKERS?

Simply put, you should use guards and soakers — and when you can get both for less than £20, why wouldn’t you invest in protection for your blades? To help you decide for yourself, we’ve broken down what they are and how they’re both used.

Skate guards are hard plastic covers that keep your edges sharp and prevent nicks while you’re walking in your skates off the ice, but don’t store your skates in them as you’re asking for rust! Skate soakers are soft, cloth-lined pouches designed to help your skates dry out as they come up to room temperature, but you can’t walk in them as they’ll tear on the sharp blades.
