Most of the Willies staff are players ourselves, so we’re super passionate about the game. We understand how critical ice skates are to your game, and we do everything possible to give you the most competitive prices from top-quality manufacturers in the business.
There are a few key differences between player and goalie ice skates that make them better adapted to keeping you safe and comfortable in the crease.
Instead of crossing the ankle, goalie skates are cut lower and have a shorter tongue, allowing you to shift position quickly. Goalies must be able to move swiftly from side to side, so instead of a heel-to-toe curved blade, goalie ice skates have a flat blade.
For players, ice skates need to be flexible for charging up the ice, whereas protection and shock absorption are more critical with goalies. Pucks can travel up to 100mph towards the net — and the keeper — so goalie ice skates tend to be stiffer with more protection around the foot.
Getting fitted for goalie ice skates is almost identical to fitting player skates in ice hockey. The best skates for you are the ones that feel comfortable and give you the stability you need to move quickly when the puck is coming at you.
Skate fitting in ice hockey is often called an ‘imperfect science’, as each goalie’s foot and preference is unique. A general guideline is that goalies should wear one size down from their regular shoe size to get a comfortable fit in their skates — your skates should feel snug but not uncomfortably tight!
Most goalie skates come in either D or EE widths — If you’ve never had issues with shoes cramping the sides of your feet, a D width should suit you just fine, or if shoe width is an issue, go for an E or EE ice skate. If you decide on a mid to higher-range pair of Bauer goalie ice skates, you can get a more tailored fit to your width and volume. Choose from Fit 1 for a narrow width with low volume, Fit 2 for medium width and volume, or Fit 3 for wide width and high volume.
One difference with fitting goalie ice skates compared to players is that a goalie's toe shouldn’t reach the toe cap — or you’ll find out pretty quickly how much a slap shot can hurt.
Like most of your gear in ice hockey, choosing the right goalie skates for you comes down to personal preference, so it’s a good idea to come into our store at Willies in Coventry to try out a few different skates.
For senior goalies, we recommend the Bauer Pro or True Custom skates. If you’re a younger goalie that’s still developing your leg muscles, we recommend the Bauer Elite skates, which aren’t quite as stiff but still give you plenty of support and protection where you need it most.
From our Willies store in Coventry, our expert team can help you find the perfect fit for your next skate. As a Bauer 3D Skate Lab retailer, we use a 3D scanner to maximise your fit and performance by taking a detailed analysis of your foot and matching you with the best skate for your needs.
