Ice hockey leg pads are designed to protect the goalie from pucks, skates and other collisions and help them block the puck from entering the net.
Like most of your gear in ice hockey, choosing the right leg pads for you comes down to personal preference, so it’s a good idea to come into our store at Willies in Coventry to try out a few different brands.
Blocking-style goalies need equipment as big as possible while remaining mobile to cover the net, so Warrior leg pads that are E+ or Pro+ are your best option. If you’re a more athletic goalie, you want small, lightweight protective gear to keep you as mobile as possible. Warrior Ritual E, Pro and Bauer Vapor Hyperlite leg pads are the best choices for these more agile goalies.
For beginner goalies, we recommend the Bauer GSX leg pads; they’re a great value option while you’re learning the fundamentals of ice hockey.
To take your leg pad measurement, bend your leg slightly and measure from your ankle to the centre of your kneecap. Then measure from the centre of your kneecap to your mid-thigh. Add those measurements together, plus your skate size and an additional inch to account for padding. This number will be your perfect leg pad size.
Goalie leg pads should cradle your knee and feel snug but not uncomfortably tight. Your leg pads also shouldn’t restrict your knee rotation or movement around the crease, so it’s a good idea to try them on with your other goalie equipment.
